Just came back from Malaysia. Had a wonderful 7 games in La Salle, which I could only win 3 out of 7. Met some friends and made some. Got trashed last game by 8 year old William Kang.
The reason I am writing this blog is because there was an important lesson that I learnt in this mini tourney. NEVER BE OVERCONFIDENT and NEVER TRY TO BE FANCY. In my 5th game against Martin Teo, I played an early double double bingo (AERIEST - this word sticks in my mind because if anyone of you have the 2005 scrabble edition on the computer, go to the game library and go to the 2003 World Scrabble Championships and the first word played by Pakorn Neimitrmansuk was aeriest). I became overly confident and carelessly opened the triple letter lane and allowed Martin to place XI, EX for over 50 points, and at the meantime, taking the leadand the game. I begane to panic, and played the bingo SHINERS hooking the s to ton, carelessly thinking ston exist. I could have played it at another place for a lower score, but it would have secured me a win. He cooly challenged it off, and there went my game AND the chance to break into the top 3 diminished.
Ah....... and why weren't any Victorians exept for Fang Hai in the La Salle mini? Fang Hai was complaining to me that the form 3s are very lazy..........
Cheers,
Victor
